Dr. Yanbin Li and Dr. Tao Wen attended ASABE (American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers) 2017 Annual International Meeting in Spokane, WA, July 23-26, 2017. Dr. Wen presented his research paper titled “A Portable Impedance Immunosensing System for Rapid Detection of Salmonella Typhimurium” with coauthors of Ronghui Wang, America Sotero and Yanbin Li. This paper was selected as ASABE-ITSC 2017 Meeting Paper Award. In this research, a portable impedance immunosensing system was developed for on-site rapid detection of S. Typhimurium in poultry and poultry products. The system consisted of a gold interdigitated array microelectrode, a data acquisition interface and a laptop computer with LabVIEW software. The results showed a linear relationship between the impedance change and the logarithmic value of S. Typhimurium cells ranging from 101 to 106 cfu/50 μl with a limit of detection of 102 cfu/50 μl and a total detection time of 1 h. Currently, more tests are conducted to improve the system with automated control and different poultry samples. The developed immunosensing system has advantages in portability, low cost, rapid detection and label-free testing which shows great potential for in-field or on-site detection of S. Typhimurium at different points of a poultry supply chain.
